SF2192 : Ban the use of triclosan in soaps and cleaning products (Amendment to SF2192 which limits the use of lead and mercury in certain products)

Triclosan contained in soaps and cleaning products ends up in our lakes and rivers.  There is evidence that this chemical is a hormone disrupter, and infectious disease experts are concerned that broad use also increases bacterial resistance making antibiotics less effective.  The Minnesota Department of Health has recommended that triclosan not be used, and the U.S. FDA has found that there is no evidence that triclosan provides any benefits to consumers.

Triclosan in surface waters exposed to sunlight also creates dangerous compounds called “dioxins” which are cancer-causing toxins and have increased by over 200% in the Mississippi River since the 1960s.

An amendment to S.F. 2192 (which limits the use of lead and mercury in certain products) would ban the use of triclosan in consumer products beginning in Jan. 2017.

What Would Happen?

A yes vote means the amendment is approved and triclosan will be banned from consumer products sold in Minnesota beginning in January 2017. The bill will now be sent to a conference committee to resolve differences with the Senate version.

A no vote means the amendment is not added to the bill.
