An important citizen’s council, the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council (LSOHC), recommended funding for the White Earth Nation to protect 2,000 acres of forest that protects a critical wild rice resource. A House committee changed the council’s recommendation and transferred the project to the DNR instead of the White Earth Nation even though the DNR is not interested in managing this parcel. An amendment on the House Floor would transfer the project back to the White Earth Nation, as originally recommended by the LSOHC.
What Would Happen?
The White Earth Nation will be allowed to manage the land acquired in the Wild Rice River watershed as recommended by the Lessard Sams Outdoor Heritage Council.
The project is transferred to the DNR.
How The House Voted
The project is transferred to the DNR.
