Most of us are well aware that the Governor has the power to protect Minnesota’s outdoors through his signature or veto. Just as important are his choices for commissioners. The Department of Natural Resources, and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency are the two that first come to mind, but his appointments to BWSR (Board of Water and Soil Resource), the Public Utilities Commission, and many other boards can also make an impact on our natural heritage and reflect his position towards conservation and the environment.
Another very important role he plays is in the creation of his annual budget. This set of documents sets the framework for the Legislature’s budget discussions and is an indication of how our state’s lakes, rivers, parks, and wetlands are going to fare in the near future. Numerous programs that clean up our waters, protect our wildlife, and maintain our parks and trails are funded by the state. Often the Governor becomes Minnesota’s last line of defense against bills that would harm our way of life.
